About iSpy.Food

Built by parents who read the fine print.

iSpy.Food is an Additive Free Kids project — made for families who want to know what's really in the packet before it goes in the trolley.

Our story

Beyond the label. Protecting kids together.

Ingredient labels weren't written for busy parents. They're printed small, packed with numbers, and organised in ways that make the important details easy to miss. A "colour (102)" three lines deep tells you almost nothing — unless you happen to know it's tartrazine, and what tartrazine is associated with.

Additive Free Kids has spent years helping Australian families cut hidden additives out of everyday food. iSpy.Food is that knowledge, turned into a tool: a searchable, scannable database of packaged products from Australia's supermarkets, with every ingredient list decoded and every product ranked.

No scare tactics, no guesswork — just the information off the back of the packet, translated into something you can act on in the middle of a shopping run.

How it works

From barcode to verdict in three steps.

Search or scan

Look a product up by name, or point your phone's camera at the barcode while you shop. Our database covers thousands of products from Coles, Woolworths and independents.

We analyse

We parse the full ingredient list — every bracket, percentage and E-number — identify each additive, its function, and the symptoms it's associated with.

You decide

Each product gets a clear ranking — BEST, BETTER, OK or AVOID — with the reasons laid out and safer alternatives suggested alongside.

Where the data comes from

Straight from the shelves.

Our product data is sourced from the published catalogues of Australia's major supermarkets — Coles and Woolworths — and refreshed as products change. Ingredient lists are captured exactly as they appear on the packet, then analysed by our ingredient engine.

Spotted a product we don't have yet? Scan it in the app and submit it — the database grows with every family that uses it.

Where we're heading

We started with families, and families stay first. But the same engine that decodes a snack bar can vet a canteen menu or score a retailer's whole range — so iSpy.Food is growing towards the organisations that feed families too: school canteens today, caterers and retailers next.
